5:57p Holy crap.
I just got the decision letter for the claim I filed with the VA last August for issues related to the car accident I was in back when I was in the Air Force. (For those who don't know, I was nearly killed in a car wreck while stationed at NORAD. I really do need to make a post about this someday.)
They've rated me 30% service-connected disabled for cervical spine problems leading to arthritis in my neck, and for headaches related to concussion.
O_O
What this means is, the VA will be sending me a compensation check of around $350/month (adjustable for cost-of-living increases) for the rest of forever. FOREVER. And the 30% rating might bump me up into a higher priority group in the VA Healthcare System, which would mean a lower co-pay to see a VA doctor. [ETA: IT DOES. It bumps me into Priority Group 2, which means FREE HEALTH CARE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. OMG.] That's also good for the rest of forever, and both are portable to wherever I live.
O_O
*looks over list of books that need to be replaced*
*also looks over travel wishlist*
I almost want to go back out and grab some boozahol to celebrate. Heh, maybe I'll do that.
current mood: Holy crap.

3:33p Catastrophic errors and all...
The computer this morning told me: "Your application has had a catastrophic error and must be reinstalled! Please contact customer service!" while working with InDesign.
I told it to shut up and behave or I'd give it to charity, and rebooting resulted in picture perfect behavior. Good computer. *pets*
It's been rather like that all day, though - lots of PARTS of things finished, and then little hiccups that make everyone panic and cause a lot of backtracking and restarting, so that the actual completed list of accomplishments? Not so good. I did get a load of laundry done, and 50 some bookmarks... not quite made. Lots of orders... not quite finished. And the first calendar is done and proofed, but the .pdf process resulted in a file size of 1 Gig (!), so I had to redo it in parts and I spent a lot of time tromping around trying to figure out a way to just flatten/rasterize everything so it wasn't such a space hog. I may or may not get it uploaded tonight, but tomorrow is really the last day I can get it to the printer and still get it for the fair.
At work this afternoon - was going to go to Shakespeare in the park this evening, but it's looking very stormy, so I think we may reschedule for tomorrow!

8:13a Help me, Dr Horrible! You're my only hope!
I really, really want to watch Dr Horrible - everyone is gabbing about it - but I cannot make it run on my connection! It's jerky and... well, horrible. Absolutely unwatchable. Pausing and allowing it to download doesn't seem to fix the problem like it does with the very rare youtubes that I watch. Is there an alternate source for it that can be cached or whatever? Anyone?

Things? They happen for a reason.
If I hadn't forgotten my laptop cable, I would not have booted up my old laptop to attempt to get my work done today without making a wasteful trip into town. I would not have realized that my 4000 was never installed on this one, and ended up (after a fruitless search for the disc) downloading the newest printer driver off of Epson.
SHINY. It is so much better and slicker than the old driver. Totally worth the frustrations of the day. Filling orders now!
Also... Dogs? They are gross.
Especially when they drink all the water in the toilet and then throw it up all over the floor. EW. And it wasn't clean water, like the perfectly good, fresh water in his dogdish. EEEEWWWW.

Also, I forgot my laptop power cord at work yesterday and today was a day off - I wasn't going to drive all the way into town until this evening for dance class.
ARGH.

12:32p Calendars! Anthology!
Woo! The end is in sight!
My earlier gleeing was for successfully finding the right fonts so that I could print the ENTIRE rough draft of the anthology. Oh, YEAH. This is gorgeous. This one blows last years anthology not only out of the water, but out of the whole YMCA. Dude. Melissa did a fabulous job on this one. I just need to mark it up, make some various corrections, gather up some high-res files, and zip it up for print.
All three of EMG'S 2009 calendars are up for pre-order! AND, there's a discount for pre-ordering - $2.00 off! AND all the 2008 and older calendars are marked down $5 off, because I have to make room for more! (And because I found another box of them in the connex last week... doh!)

I have gathered up the work for the next DFFH coloring book - I just need to figure out a cover (I have an idea), and get it off to the presses. Would be nice to have that done sooner than later, what with turnaround time.
Lunch now.

10:36a Lacking substance
With writing, as with art, I am very motivated to improve.
As with art, I know that the best way to do that is to write as much as possible, and to spend time on the craft. No skill grows from a vacuum. The other thing I understand is that clear, unbiased understanding of flaws and weaknesses is key.
So, here's what I need to work on in my short fiction writing: substance. I tend to write little, punchy, emotional vignettes. Characterization seems well-received, and I generally have a solid sense of setting and dialogue and all the nuts and bolts. Sometimes the stories move a larger plot along, but rarely are they self-standing.
I got a story rejection this weekend that said that the piece I submitted felt like a excerpt. This rather solidified my suspicion that this was the case. They liked it enough to ask if there were a longer piece it was a part of that I could submit... but by itself? Not effective.
So. That's my goal with the next bit of writing I do.
In the meantime, have some $%^&* raven feathers:
